Man dies after self-immolation outside UN headquarters in New York
A man died on Thursday after setting himself on fire outside the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, prompting an investigation by local authorities and expressions of condolences from UN officials.
The New York City Police Department said officers responded to an emergency call near the UN complex on Thursday evening. The individual was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigation Underway
Police have opened an investigation into the incident but have not announced any findings regarding a motive.
Several media reports indicated that the man was carrying a Tibetan flag at the time of the incident, though authorities have not linked the act to any specific cause.
Rights Group Identifies The Victim
Tencho Gyatso, president of the International Campaign for Tibet, identified the deceased as Lobga Rangzen.
In a statement, Gyatso described Rangzen as a long-time advocate for Tibet who dedicated his efforts to raising international awareness of human rights issues affecting Tibet through peaceful activism.
United Nations Expresses Condolences
A spokesperson for António Guterres said the United Nations was deeply saddened by the incident and extended its condolences to the victim's family.
The organization did not provide additional comments while the investigation remains ongoing.
