Major advancements in augmented reality glasses ahead of CES 2026

Three companies have announced significant breakthroughs in augmented reality (AR) components on December 30, 2025, addressing longstanding barriers to widespread adoption ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas, where these technologies will be showcased from January 6 to 9. Himax Technologies, Inc. and AUO Corporation unveiled a front-lit LCoS microdisplay designed to make AR glasses practical for daily wear. Weighing only 0.21 grams without the collimating lens and consuming just 200 milliwatts of power while delivering up to 350,000 nits of brightness, this technology addresses key comfort and energy efficiency concerns that have hindered AR adoption.

"AR wearable devices are advancing rapidly, creating a strong demand for next-generation display technologies," stated Dr. Wei-Lung Liau, Chief Technology Officer at AUO. Jordan Wu, General Manager of Himax, noted that the module "is currently being actively evaluated by several leading technology firms and manufacturers of professional AR glasses worldwide."

Separately, Magic Leap announced a manufacturing agreement with Pegatron to increase the production of AR glasses components, including light-weight optical waveguides that offer high visual performance. This partnership combines Magic Leap's optical expertise with Pegatron's high-volume manufacturing capabilities to meet commercial reliability and yield requirements. "By combining our optical and systemic know-how with Pegatron's manufacturing depth, we are creating a clear path to commercially scale AR components," said Jade Meskill, Senior Vice President of Product Development and Partner at Magic Leap.

In another development, Ganzin presented the AURORA IIE eye-tracking platform, which uses a custom ASIC processor consuming a quarter of the power compared to NPU-based solutions while allowing continuous operation. The Eye Processing Unit 2 (EPU2) measures 3.6 x 3.6 mm and supports a throughput of up to 120 Hz for gaze interaction and biometric detection. "Our custom ASIC, EPU2, enables unprecedented energy efficiency and allows continuous operation, paving the way for new applications in interaction, well-being, and research," said Dr. Shao-Yi Chien, CEO of Ganzin.

The announcements reflect a growing momentum in AR hardware. Global shipments of smart glasses increased by 110% year-over-year in the first half of 2025, while the AR glasses market is projected to reach between $15 and $25 billion by 2025. Industry analysts identify energy efficiency, comfort, and manufacturability as critical factors for mainstream adoption.
