Japan: Massive fire forces evacuation of over 170 buildings in Oita
A large fire broke out in the southern Japanese city of Oita, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 170 buildings and leaving one elderly resident missing, according to local officials.
The blaze started on Wednesday during a period of strong winds, which helped the flames spread quickly toward nearby forested areas. Emergency teams evacuated at least 175 people, relocating them to temporary shelters as firefighters struggled to contain the advancing flames.
Residents described scenes of panic as smoke and fire lit up the sky. One eyewitness told public broadcaster NHK that the horizon “turned red,” adding that the intensity of the wind made the situation unpredictable and dangerous.
Fire crews worked throughout the day to halt the fire’s progression, though parts of the city experienced power outages due to the damage. Local media footage showed thick smoke rising above the town and several structures reduced to rubble.
Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed that a military helicopter had been deployed to support firefighting operations at the request of the governor of Oita Prefecture.
Oita, located on the island of Kyushu about 770 kilometers from Tokyo, is known for its coastal hills and active fishing harbor, particularly famous for premium mackerel. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
