In Amsterdam, Israeli soccer fans faced violent assaults after a match, with authorities reporting that five individuals required hospitalization and 62 suspects were detained. Officials described the attackers as targeting Israeli supporters in what Mayor Femke Halsema called a deeply shameful moment for the city. The police did not disclose the nationalities of those injured or arrested.

Israel’s government responded by coordinating return flights for affected fans. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed efforts to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens, opting for civilian flights over a military rescue mission. The first plane from Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport was scheduled to reach Amsterdam within hours.

The attacks reportedly intensified following a Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax, though tensions had already flared earlier with clashes between Israeli fans and locals. A pro-Palestinian demonstration near the stadium, which Mayor Halsema had banned, added to concerns over potential violence.

"This is a dark moment for Amsterdam, and I am deeply ashamed," Halsema expressed during a news conference, describing the attacks as coordinated assaults against visitors to the city.

The unrest coincided with rising incidents of antisemitism in Europe since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks on Israel, which have fueled widespread violence. Prior to the match, Maccabi fans staged a pro-Israel march in central Amsterdam, where flares were ignited, and some Palestinian flags were removed amid anti-Arab chants, further heightening tensions.

Israeli officials denounced the violence, with President Isaac Herzog likening the attacks to historical antisemitic pogroms. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the assaults, assuring that authorities would bring those responsible to justice. Far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders expressed outrage over the incident, calling for strict measures against the attackers.

This violent episode highlights the challenges of maintaining public order amidst heightened geopolitical tensions in Europe.
