Israel begins release of nearly 2,000 Palestinian detainees under Gaza ceasefire deal
The process to release almost 2,000 Palestinian detainees began on Monday as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement that also includes the return of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The operation marks a critical stage in the implementation of the truce following two years of devastating conflict.
According to an official involved in the process, all 1,966 Palestinian detainees designated for release have boarded buses from Israeli prisons. The detainees include 1,716 Palestinians from Gaza who will be released at Nasser Hospital, and 250 others who had been serving life sentences and are expected to be transferred to the West Bank, Jerusalem, and several destinations abroad.
The mass release coincides with Hamas’ handover of the first seven Israeli hostages to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) earlier on Monday. The exchange is seen as a pivotal confidence-building measure in the early implementation of the ceasefire deal aimed at bringing an end to prolonged violence and humanitarian suffering in Gaza.
The agreement, brokered with international mediation, is expected to pave the way for further exchanges and discussions on long-term stability between Israel and Palestinian factions. The coordinated transfers mark a rare moment of cooperation between opposing sides after years of deep mistrust and bloodshed.
