Iran thanks Pakistan for support at UN human rights council
Iran has expressed its appreciation to Pakistan for backing Tehran during a recent vote at the United Nations Human Rights Council, where Islamabad opposed a resolution aimed at intensifying scrutiny of Iran’s human rights record.
According to official statements, Iran’s Foreign Minister conveyed his gratitude during a phone conversation with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, who was on an official visit abroad at the time. The discussion also covered broader regional and international issues, reflecting ongoing diplomatic coordination between the two countries.
The resolution in question was adopted following a special session of the Human Rights Council and extended the mandate of an independent international fact-finding mission examining alleged human rights violations in Iran. It also renewed the mandate of the UN special rapporteur on the country’s human rights situation.
While the resolution was approved by a majority, several countries voted against it, including Pakistan, China, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Cuba, and Vietnam. These states argued that such measures should not be politicized and emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation.
The fact-finding mission has been tasked with investigating allegations linked to nationwide protests that erupted late last year, as well as examining potential legal implications related to reported abuses.
