Iran signals willingness to make concessions in nuclear talks with Washington

Iran has indicated a readiness to discuss potential compromises in ongoing nuclear negotiations with the United States, provided that Washington is open to lifting sanctions. This statement was made by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi during a recent interview with the BBC.

Tehran has expressed willingness to negotiate limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of economic sanctions, while maintaining that missile programs and other issues will not be linked to the talks.

Upcoming negotiation cycle

A second round of nuclear discussions is scheduled for Tuesday in Geneva, following earlier meetings in Oman. A U.S. delegation, including emissaries Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is expected to meet Iranian officials, with Omani representatives acting as mediators.

The Iranian Atomic Energy Organization recently suggested that Tehran could consider diluting its highest enriched uranium in exchange for full financial sanctions relief. Takht-Ravanchi cited this as an example of Iran’s flexibility, while reaffirming that a complete halt to uranium enrichment remains unacceptable to Tehran, which has been a central obstacle in prior negotiations.

Regional tensions and military concerns

Takht-Ravanchi also voiced concern over U.S. statements emphasizing regime change, noting that such rhetoric undermines trust in the negotiations. He warned that any military escalation could have severe consequences for the region, describing a new conflict as “traumatic and harmful for everyone,” and emphasized that Iran perceives threats to its existence seriously.

Iran has repeatedly stated that U.S. military bases in the region would be considered legitimate targets in the event of conflict, while previous strikes, including at al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, avoided direct casualties among U.S. personnel.
