India strengthens defence ties with Vietnam through BrahMos missile agreement
India has announced the signing of a defence agreement with Vietnam for the supply of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, marking another important step in New Delhi’s efforts to expand its defence exports and strengthen strategic partnerships across Southeast Asia.
The announcement was made by India's Defence Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Singh, during the Shangri-La Dialogue, one of Asia’s leading security and defence forums. According to Singh, India has also reached the final stages of negotiations for a similar agreement with Indonesia, reflecting the country's growing engagement with ASEAN members in the field of defence and security.
The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, is recognized for its high speed, precision, and versatility. It can be launched from land, sea, and air platforms, making it one of the most advanced missile systems in service today.
The agreement with Vietnam highlights the deepening strategic relationship between the two countries, which share common interests in maintaining regional stability, maritime security, and freedom of navigation. The deal is expected to include not only the delivery of missile systems but also training and logistical support.
India has been actively promoting its domestic defence manufacturing sector under its broader strategy of achieving greater self-reliance while increasing military exports. The country has already supplied BrahMos missiles to the Philippines and continues to explore new opportunities in international defence markets.
Analysts view the agreement as a sign of India's growing role as a defence supplier in the Indo-Pacific region. As geopolitical competition intensifies across Asia, partnerships based on security cooperation and defence technology are becoming increasingly important for regional nations seeking to modernize their armed forces and strengthen deterrence capabilities.
With negotiations progressing with Indonesia and other potential partners, India appears determined to expand its defence footprint while reinforcing strategic ties with key countries across Southeast Asia.
