Hungary accuses the EU of being unprepared for peace in Ukraine
Hungary’s foreign minister has openly criticized the European Union, claiming that the bloc is not ready to pursue peace in Ukraine and is instead continuing a strategy focused on prolonging the conflict.
Speaking after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Peter Szijjarto said that several senior diplomats had acknowledged for the first time that peace is not currently a priority for the Union. He warned that such an approach poses serious risks, particularly as European funds continue to be directed toward military support.
Szijjarto argued that decision-making in Brussels has become increasingly ideological, accusing EU institutions of ignoring alternative diplomatic paths. According to him, the continued financial and military involvement places a growing burden on European citizens.
Hungary has repeatedly taken positions that diverge from mainstream EU policy, especially on issues related to the war in Ukraine and migration. Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government maintains that national interests and regional stability should take precedence over prolonged confrontation.
Tensions between Hungary and Ukraine have intensified in recent days, following diplomatic disputes and sharp exchanges between leaders. Despite criticism from EU partners, Budapest insists it will continue to pursue an independent foreign policy stance.
