Humanoid robots outpace humans in Beijing half-marathon
Humanoid robots demonstrated remarkable technological progress by outperforming human runners during a half-marathon held in Beijing, highlighting the rapid evolution of robotics and artificial intelligence.
The event, which featured both human participants and robotic competitors running on parallel tracks, showcased significant improvements compared to its inaugural edition the previous year. At that time, many robots struggled to complete the race, facing technical failures and navigation issues.
In contrast, this year’s competition saw over 100 teams participate, with several robots displaying enhanced speed, endurance, and autonomy. Notably, many of the machines were able to navigate the 21-kilometer course independently, without the need for remote control, marking a major step forward in real-world robotic capabilities.
One of the standout performers was a humanoid robot developed by the Chinese technology brand Honor, which completed the race in just over 50 minutes—faster than top human competitors and even surpassing recent elite athletic benchmarks.
The achievement reflects China’s growing leadership in humanoid robotics, a sector that authorities and industry leaders hope will play a transformative role in manufacturing, logistics, and service industries.
Experts suggest that such demonstrations are not merely symbolic but indicate tangible progress in integrating robots into complex, dynamic environments. As technology continues to advance, humanoid robots may increasingly take on roles that require both physical agility and intelligent decision-making.
