Heatwave death toll in Spain exceeds 1,000 in July amid climate concerns

More than 1,060 people in Spain are estimated to have died from heat-related causes in July 2025, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of Health. The figure represents an alarming 57% increase compared to the same month in 2024.

The estimate is based on data from the MoMo (Monitoring of Mortality) system, run by the Carlos III Health Institute. MoMo tracks daily deaths across Spain and highlights deviations from expected mortality trends using historical data. While it doesn’t establish a direct causal link between deaths and high temperatures, it offers the best available approximation of heat-related mortality.

Between May 16 and July 13, 2025, the system recorded 1,180 deaths linked to heatwaves — a sharp rise compared to just 70 during the same period in 2024, the Health Ministry stated in an official release.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) also reported that June 2025 was the hottest June on record, with an average temperature of 23.7°C. A second wave of extreme heat began last Sunday and is expected to continue through the end of the week.

Climate experts emphasize that global warming is making heatwaves more frequent, longer, and more intense, posing increasing risks to vulnerable populations.
