Anne Claire Legendre appointed president of the Arab World Institute

French diplomat Anne Claire Legendre, a close adviser to President Emmanuel Macron, has been appointed president of the Arab World Institute, days after the resignation of Jack Lang.

Originally from Brittany, the 46 year old career diplomat speaks Arabic, a language she studied at the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations in Paris. She is also a graduate of Sciences Po Paris and holds a degree in modern literature from the Sorbonne. With her appointment, she becomes the first woman to lead the Paris based cultural institution dedicated to strengthening ties between France and the Arab world.

A specialist in North Africa and the Middle East, Legendre most recently served as adviser on North Africa and the Middle East within the diplomatic team at the Élysée Palace. She previously held the role of spokesperson for the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, further consolidating her experience in regional affairs and public diplomacy.

Members of the Arab World Institute’s board praised her credentials and expertise. One ambassador sitting on the board described her as an exceptional figure with deep knowledge of the Arab world and strong negotiation skills. Another board member highlighted her detailed understanding of countries across both the Maghreb and the Middle East, citing her competence and commitment to the region.

The Arab World Institute, established to promote cultural dialogue between France and Arab countries, enters a new chapter under Legendre’s leadership as it seeks to maintain its role as a key platform for cultural exchange and diplomatic engagement.
