Seven suspects referred for voluntary homicide in the Quentin Deranque case

Seven men have been referred to investigating judges in France on suspicion of voluntary homicide in connection with the death of nationalist activist Quentin Deranque, who was fatally assaulted one week ago.

The public prosecutor of Lyon, Thierry Dran, requested that the suspects be formally charged and placed in pre-trial detention, citing risks of public disorder, possible collusion, and the destruction of evidence. A judicial investigation has been opened and entrusted to three examining magistrates.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 26, were arrested earlier this week. During police questioning, two refused to speak, while the others acknowledged being present at the scene of the assault. Some admitted to having struck the victim or other individuals but denied any intent to kill.

According to the prosecutor, three of the suspects stated they were affiliated with or close to far-left movements. Authorities have not confirmed whether any of them are listed in France’s “Fiche S” security database, which tracks individuals considered potentially dangerous to national security.

Two of the suspects have prior criminal records, including charges related to violence, drug use, theft, and weapons possession. A third is currently under judicial supervision in Paris in a separate case involving aggravated violence based on race, ethnicity, or religion.

Among those arrested are students, private-sector employees, an unemployed individual, and a parliamentary assistant identified as Jacques-Elie Favrot, a collaborator of Raphaël Arnault, a member of La France Insoumise. Arnault announced that steps had been taken to suspend the assistant’s contract.

Investigators identified the suspects through witness testimonies, video footage, and forensic evidence. Authorities indicated that several individuals present at the scene have yet to be identified.

Four additional individuals suspected of helping the accused evade justice were briefly detained and later released. They are expected to be summoned at a later date to answer allegations related to assisting offenders.
