Guy Bévert, drummer and singer of La Compagnie Créole, dies at 76

Guy Bévert, the Guadeloupean drummer and vocalist who helped shape the joyful sound of La Compagnie Créole, died overnight from Wednesday to Thursday at the age of 76, the group’s spokesperson confirmed on Saturday. A founding member of the iconic 1980s band, Bévert had stepped away from the stage in 2021 after suffering a severe stroke.

In a tribute shared on social media, the group recalled how Bévert, first recognized for his skill behind the drums, soon became one of the band’s vocal pillars, performing alongside Clémence Bringtown, José Sébéloué, and Julien Tarquin. His deep, warm voice helped define the group’s festive and upbeat identity.

La Compagnie Créole, formed by artists from the French Antilles and French Guiana, became a major musical phenomenon in the 1980s thanks to feel-good hits such as “C’est bon pour le moral,” “Au bal masqué,” and “Ça fait rire les oiseaux.” Their songs remain popular across generations in the Francophone world.

Bévert’s death follows that of fellow band member José Sébéloué, who passed away in 2023. As the group approaches the 50th anniversary of its first album in 2026, fans and musicians alike are mourning the loss of another key figure in a band that brought Caribbean rhythms into mainstream French pop culture.
