Germany: Cyberattack on ticketing system exposes banking data of thousands of customers
A cyberattack has potentially exposed the bank card data of between 30,000 and 35,000 customers in Germany, affecting the online ticketing system of Hamburg’s popular tourist attraction, Miniatur Wunderland, according to German media reports on Saturday.
A spokeswoman for the attraction said that “data traffic between our server and the payment provider’s server was manipulated, allowing information to be intercepted.” She added that the breach was linked to malware that had likely been active since June and was discovered after a credit card company issued an alert.
The attraction contacted all potentially affected customers via email and notified the police. External forensic IT specialists have also been brought in to investigate the incident.
Miniatur Wunderland, opened in 2001, is one of Hamburg’s most iconic sites. Home to the world’s largest model railway, it remains one of Germany’s top tourist destinations, attracting nearly 1.6 million visitors in 2024 and over 25 million since its opening.
