French nurses secure €500 million deal with health insurance
French private nurses have reached a major agreement with the national health insurance system, providing over €500 million in additional annual funding aimed at improving their pay and updating reimbursement for healthcare services.
Under the deal, expected to be gradually implemented between late 2026 and 2028, private nurses could see an extra €306 per month in revenue by the end of 2027, roughly half of which would contribute directly to net income. The agreement includes updated tariffs for technical procedures and care for dependent patients.
The reforms follow years of stagnation in nurses' real income. Since 2008, net earnings for private nurses have decreased by 7.7% in constant euros. The agreement also introduces new “nurse consultations” reimbursed at €20, aimed at managing chronic illnesses, post-hospital care, and preventive health assessments.
Additionally, the agreement allows nurses to handle simple wound care without prior medical prescriptions, supports participation in non-scheduled care, and promotes advanced nursing practices. While the deal is seen as a significant step forward, unions note that fuel costs and gradual implementation continue to challenge nurses’ financial situation.
