French journalist imprisoned in Algeria "Fighting" but "Isolated," say parent
French sports journalist Christophe Gleizes, currently imprisoned in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria, is maintaining his morale but feels “cut off from the world,” according to his parents, who visited him twice in August.
Gleizes, a contributor to So Foot and Society magazines, was sentenced to seven years in prison on June 29 for contacts with Kabyle football officials. He faces charges of “apology for terrorism” and “possession of publications for propaganda against national interest,” which his family describes as “completely absurd.”
His mother, Sylvie Godard, said during a visit on August 12 that despite his shaved head, Gleizes was in good physical condition and exercising regularly to relieve stress. The short meetings allowed them to convey messages from family, friends, and journalists mobilizing for his case through Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
Gleizes’ stepfather, Francis Godard, added that the visits reassured him, as he feared being forgotten in prison. “Even if he is combative and in good spirits, he feels totally isolated from the world,” Sylvie Godard said.
The journalist’s family hopes his appeal trial will take place in late September or October. They are uncertain if they or his French lawyer, Emmanuel Daoud, will obtain visas to attend the proceedings. His father emphasized that Gleizes is a “collateral victim” of the current strained relations between France and Algeria and should not be used as a political pawn.
