Foreign campaigns exposed as X reveals fake accounts targeting Morocco

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has unveiled a new feature that identifies the country of origin for user accounts. This transparency tool has uncovered a network of foreign-operated accounts targeting Morocco, many of which falsely claim to be based in the country.

The feature, launched last Friday, revealed that numerous accounts engaging in anti-Moroccan campaigns are primarily operated from Algeria and Canada. Other accounts were traced to various Arab countries, including some that officially maintain friendly relations with Morocco. Screenshots shared on the platform highlighted the locations of these accounts, many of which had posed as Moroccan users.

Nikita Bier, X’s Head of Product, described the tool as an effort to enhance user confidence by helping them verify the authenticity of profiles and content. However, the feature has also exposed a deliberate effort by foreign actors to harm Morocco's reputation. Intelligence experts have long suspected that foreign entities, particularly from neighboring Algeria, have been running coordinated operations to create digital disturbances in Morocco.

These operations often rely on fake accounts to manipulate trending topics and amplify contentious narratives. Many of these accounts migrated to X after Facebook implemented stricter location-verification policies. The findings also indicate that some of these accounts are linked to individuals wanted by Moroccan authorities, some of whom reside in Canada. These individuals operate both openly and anonymously, with motives ranging from executing funded propaganda to seeking personal benefits in exchange for their activities.

Morocco’s intelligence services have tracked similar campaigns for years, noting the strategic use of social media to destabilize the country. The newly unveiled feature by X has provided a clearer view of the scale and coordination behind these efforts, particularly by foreign entities intent on targeting Morocco's internal stability.
