Germany’s financial watchdog steps up AI inspections over rising cyber risks
Germany’s financial regulator has announced new targeted inspections across the banking and financial sector amid growing concerns over cybersecurity risks linked to rapid advances in artificial intelligence.
The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, known as BaFin, warned that cyber threats are becoming increasingly “substantial” as AI technologies evolve and become more capable of identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in digital systems.
According to the regulator, a newly created division will focus on conducting detailed inspections of financial institutions to assess their preparedness against emerging cyber risks. Authorities aim to ensure that banks and other financial companies strengthen their digital defenses in response to increasingly sophisticated AI-driven threats.
BaFin President Mark Branson stated that modern AI systems are capable of detecting weaknesses in both new and existing IT infrastructures at high speed, raising concerns that such vulnerabilities could be exploited more quickly than ever before.
He emphasized that improving cybersecurity is no longer optional for the financial sector but an urgent necessity, describing it as a critical investment for maintaining financial stability and trust in digital systems.
The announcement comes as global financial institutions closely monitor the rapid development of advanced AI models, which cybersecurity experts say could significantly increase both opportunities and risks in the industry. Banks worldwide are already testing new technologies while also facing growing pressure from regulators to reinforce security standards.
Experts warn that legacy banking systems may be particularly exposed to these new types of cyber threats, prompting regulators in multiple countries to issue warnings and strengthen oversight of financial technology infrastructure.
Authorities in the United States and Europe have already begun giving selected banks access to advanced AI systems for testing purposes, while simultaneously evaluating potential risks related to data security, fraud and system manipulation.
