Washington increases sanctions to curb Iranian oil sales to China

The administration of Donald Trump announced new sanctions targeting individuals and companies accused of helping facilitate Iranian oil exports to China, intensifying economic pressure on Tehran amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

According to the United States Department of the Treasury, the measures affect several people and entities allegedly linked to Iranian oil trading networks. Some of those sanctioned are associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, while others are companies based in Dubai and Hong Kong accused of participating in financial or logistical operations connected to oil shipments.

American authorities claim that Iran relies on front companies and complex international networks to continue exporting oil despite existing sanctions. Washington also accuses Tehran of using what is often referred to as a “shadow fleet” of vessels designed to bypass international restrictions and transport crude oil discreetly.

Scott Bessent stated that the United States would continue efforts to reduce the financial resources available to Iran, particularly those allegedly linked to military activities, regional armed groups and nuclear ambitions.

The sanctions come only days before a planned meeting between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Analysts believe the situation in the Middle East and China’s economic ties with Iran could become important topics during their discussions.

China remains one of the primary destinations for Iranian oil exports, making Beijing directly concerned by tensions between Washington and Tehran. The issue also raises concerns about energy security and maritime stability near the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route for global oil transportation.

In recent weeks, the United States has expanded sanctions against several Chinese and Hong Kong-based companies accused of supporting Iran through technological, commercial or logistical services.

Under U.S. law, the sanctions generally involve freezing any assets held in the United States and prohibiting American individuals and companies from conducting business with the targeted entities.
