FBI confirms DNA of suspect matches evidence in Charlie Kirk murder case
The FBI has confirmed that DNA samples collected at the scene of the murder of American conservative commentator Charlie Kirk match the profile of the suspect currently in custody. The announcement was made on Monday by FBI Director Kash Patel, who has faced criticism for his initial handling of the case.
Kirk, 31, a well-known supporter of former president Donald Trump and a prominent voice in conservative and Christian nationalist circles, was fatally shot last Wednesday during a debate at Utah Valley University. The incident has shaken the United States and exposed once again its deep political divisions.
The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested after a 33-hour manhunt. While investigators have gathered physical evidence—including a rifle, a screwdriver, and a cloth wrapped around the weapon—his exact motivations remain unclear. According to authorities, Robinson allegedly left a note expressing his intent to “eliminate Charlie Kirk.”
Senior FBI officials have described the case as a possible act of “domestic terrorism.” Robinson, who has reportedly become more politically radical in recent months, is expected to be formally charged in Utah on Tuesday.
Charlie Kirk, often criticized by opponents for controversial views but admired among conservative groups, played a significant role in mobilizing young voters for Donald Trump during the 2024 election. His death has sparked strong reactions across the political spectrum, with some allies of Trump accusing left-wing movements of fueling extremism.
President Joe Biden is scheduled to attend a memorial service for Kirk in Arizona on Sunday, underscoring the national attention drawn by this high-profile assassination.
