North Korea warns against any Japanese move toward nuclear weapons
North Korea has strongly condemned recent remarks attributed to a Japanese government official suggesting that Japan may need nuclear weapons, warning that any attempt by Tokyo to “go nuclear” must be prevented.
According to North Korean state media, the statement described such a move as a serious threat not only to regional stability but also to humanity as a whole. Pyongyang accused Japan of reviving militaristic ambitions and claimed that nuclear armament would lead to severe consequences.
The reaction followed reports by Japanese media indicating that a source close to the prime minister’s office made the comments during an informal discussion. The remarks quickly sparked criticism within Japan, with members of both the ruling coalition and opposition parties distancing themselves from the idea and calling for accountability.
In response, the Japanese government reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to the country’s three non-nuclear principles, which reject the possession, production, or introduction of nuclear weapons. Officials stressed that Japan remains dedicated to nuclear disarmament and to the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Japan, the only country to have experienced atomic bombings during wartime, has repeatedly emphasized its intention to pursue realistic and diplomatic measures aimed at achieving a world free of nuclear weapons
