EU officials defend sovereignty after US sanctions on Thierry Breton
European officials have strongly defended the bloc’s sovereignty following U.S. sanctions targeting former European Commissioner Thierry Breton and four other EU figures involved in tech regulation.
“None of these sanctions will silence the sovereignty of European peoples,” stated EU Commissioner Stéphane Séjourné on social media, expressing full solidarity with Breton and the other affected Europeans. Breton, who served as Commissioner for the Internal Market from 2019 to 2024, was a key architect of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which imposes stricter rules on technology platforms, including the reporting of harmful content.
The Trump administration announced travel bans against Breton and other EU officials, viewing the DSA as a potential restriction on free expression. Breton criticized the move as a “McCarthyist wind” in the U.S., noting that 90% of the European Parliament and all 27 member states approved the legislation.
Séjourné emphasized that defending European regulatory standards is part of upholding democratic principles and the EU’s sovereignty.
