French tourist reported missing in northeastern Chad

A French tourist has been reported missing in northeastern Chad after failing to return from an excursion near the Guelta de Bachikele, a remote oasis in the Ennedi region, local authorities confirmed.

According to regional officials, the man disappeared Wednesday evening while visiting the area during the International Festival of Saharan Cultures, which recently resumed after several years of interruption. The event, held in Amdjarass near the Sudanese border, celebrates the traditions and heritage of Saharan communities.

The tourist had reportedly ventured into the desert landscape with a companion without a guide to explore the surroundings. When the pair did not return as expected, search teams were deployed. One of the two individuals has since been located, while the second remains missing.

Chadian military units have joined local authorities in ongoing search operations. Officials stressed that the area is under security control, although the Ennedi region is classified as high-risk by several foreign ministries due to its proximity to conflict zones and the challenges posed by its vast, rugged terrain.

France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs said its embassy in Chad and crisis response center in Paris are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Chadian authorities.

The Ennedi massif, known for its dramatic rock formations and desert oases, is a UNESCO-listed natural site and a draw for adventure tourism. However, its isolation and extreme environment can make rescue operations complex.

Search efforts remain underway as authorities attempt to locate the missing traveler.
