Bulgarian Central Bank deputy governor appointed to lead caretaker government
Bulgarian Central Bank Deputy Governor Andrey Gurov has accepted the mandate to form a caretaker government, the Bulgarian News Agency reported Thursday. The appointment follows the decision of President Iliana Iotova, who is currently serving as acting head of state after former President Rumen Radev resigned last month.
Gurov pledged to approach his role with responsibility and transparency, emphasizing the importance of organizing fair and credible elections. “Our task is to ensure citizens feel their vote matters, and to manage this period calmly without creating panic,” he stated during the official ceremony.
Bulgaria has faced a political stalemate since Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov resigned on December 11, 2025, following widespread protests. Three prior attempts to form a new government failed, prompting the president to invoke constitutional procedures to install a temporary Cabinet and schedule early parliamentary elections within two months.
As caretaker prime minister, Gurov will oversee the country during this transitional period, ensuring that elections are conducted smoothly and that governmental functions continue without disruption.
