Brazil: Tornado kills five and injures over 100 in the South
At least five people were killed and more than 130 injured after a powerful tornado struck the southern Brazilian state of Paraná on Friday, devastating part of the municipality of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu.
According to the state’s Civil Defense, “five deaths have been confirmed following the tornado” that swept through the region. The violent winds overturned vehicles, uprooted trees, and destroyed numerous homes in the small town, located about 300 kilometers from the famous Iguaçu Falls.
Authorities reported that around 30 people sustained serious or moderate injuries, while roughly 100 suffered minor wounds. The Environmental Technology and Monitoring System of Paraná estimated that wind speeds reached between 180 and 250 km/h.
The state governor, Ratinho Junior, said on X (formerly Twitter) that security forces were “on alert, mobilized, and monitoring the affected towns” following the violent storms.
The National Institute of Meteorology has maintained a severe storm warning for the entire state of Paraná, as well as for the southern states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, which border Argentina and Uruguay.
