Bolsonaro undergoes medical procedure to treat persistent hiccups
Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has undergone a medical procedure to address persistent hiccups that he has reportedly suffered from for several months, according to statements from his medical team.
The 70-year-old ex-leader, currently serving a prison sentence for his role in an attempted coup, was temporarily transferred from detention to a hospital in Brasília earlier this week for medical treatment. Doctors initially performed surgery to correct an inguinal hernia, which was described as successful and without complications.
Following this operation, physicians carried out a non-surgical medical intervention aimed at alleviating chronic hiccups. The procedure involved an anesthetic block of part of the phrenic nerve, which plays a key role in controlling the diaphragm. Medical staff indicated that the treatment was well tolerated and that further care may be provided if necessary.
According to people close to Bolsonaro, the recurring hiccups are believed to be a long-term consequence of serious abdominal injuries he sustained during a knife attack at a political rally in 2018, which required multiple surgeries.
Once his hospital care is completed, Bolsonaro is expected to return to detention. He continues to deny wrongdoing in relation to his conviction, maintaining that he is the victim of political persecution.
