Brazil: court rejects Bolsonaro’s request for house arrest
Brazil’s Supreme Court has rejected a request by former president Jair Bolsonaro to serve his prison sentence under house arrest on medical grounds, according to a judicial decision released on Thursday.
Bolsonaro, who is currently incarcerated for his role in an attempted coup, had filed the request through his lawyers, citing health concerns. The 70-year-old former head of state has been hospitalized in Brasília since late December, where he underwent surgery for an inguinal hernia.
In its ruling, the court determined that the medical arguments presented did not justify a change in the conditions of detention. The judges emphasized that appropriate medical care can be provided within the existing legal framework.
The former president, who led Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted of orchestrating actions aimed at remaining in power following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election.
The decision highlights the judiciary’s stance on enforcing accountability at the highest political levels and has reignited public debate in Brazil over justice, democracy, and the rule of law.
