Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has emerged as one of the most polarizing figures in artificial intelligence, according to a comprehensive Business Insider profile published on September 1, 2025. Known for his bold predictions, Amodei has cautioned that AI could eliminate half of entry-level office jobs within five years, drawing sharp criticism and sparking debate across Silicon Valley.

Bold warnings of AI-driven job loss

Amodei has publicly stated that AI’s rapid development could drive unemployment rates to 10–20% as the technology transitions from augmenting human work to fully replacing it. First reported by Axios in May 2025, these forecasts have unsettled rivals in the tech sector. His warnings have positioned him as both a visionary and a disruptor, with some viewing his remarks as alarmist.

Clashes with industry leaders

Amodei’s stance has led to open conflicts with key tech figures, including Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang. In June 2025, during the VivaTech conference in Paris, Huang accused Amodei of leveraging safety concerns to justify market control. Huang argued that Amodei’s position suggested AI was “so dangerous that only they [Anthropic] should handle it.”

The company’s annual revenue skyrocketed from $1 billion in early 2025 to over $5 billion by August 2025. In September 2025, Anthropic secured $13 billion in funding, valuing the company at $183 billion cementing its status as one of the world’s most valuable startups.

Founded in 2021 by Amodei, his sister Daniela, and former OpenAI colleagues, Anthropic has positioned itself as a “responsible alternative” in the AI race. Unlike OpenAI, which focuses on consumer-facing products, Anthropic targets enterprise clients with its Claude AI system, renowned for its programming capabilities.

Amodei’s influence extends beyond Anthropic’s success. In 2025, he was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people, with actor Ashton Kutcher praising his ability to balance technological innovation with ethical responsibility. Time also included him in its list of the 100 most influential figures in AI.

Born in San Francisco in 1983, Amodei’s career has been shaped by personal loss and scientific rigor. After his father’s death, he shifted from theoretical physics to biophysics, earning a PhD from Princeton. He later worked at Baidu, Google, and OpenAI, where he contributed to the development of GPT-2 and GPT-3 before leaving in 2020 over concerns about AI safety and development priorities.
