America’s Cup to debut in Naples in 2027
The 38th edition of the America’s Cup will take place for the first time ever in Italy, with Naples hosting the prestigious sailing event in 2027. This marks a historic milestone as the world’s oldest and most celebrated sailing competition arrives on Italian shores, offering the local teams a home advantage to claim the trophy.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the event, highlighting that the races will be held in spring and summer near the iconic Mount Vesuvius and along Naples’ vibrant waterfront.
Team New Zealand, the current champions since 2017, will defend their title. However, unlike tradition, they could not secure government support to host the event, leading to Italy being chosen as the venue instead. Grant Dalton, CEO of Team New Zealand, praised the Italian audience’s passion and the strong competition from Luna Rossa, the Italian challenger that reached the finals in 2021.
Despite their impressive performance, Luna Rossa was eliminated in 2022 by the British team INEOS Britannia, which eventually lost to New Zealand in the final. Yet, uncertainty surrounds the participation of both defending and challenger teams for 2027. Peter Burling, New Zealand’s skipper, will not compete due to a contract disagreement, and INEOS Britannia has withdrawn from the next race after internal disputes.
This withdrawal opens the door for Ben Ainslie, the British Olympic gold medallist, to possibly lead a new British challenge if he can secure adequate funding.
