Algeria begins to cancel air services agreement with UAE
Algeria has officially started the process of terminating its air services agreement with the United Arab Emirates, originally signed in Abu Dhabi in May 2013. The move was announced by Algerian state media, which said the termination procedure is being conducted in line with the agreement's Article 22.
Under this clause, Algeria must formally notify the UAE through diplomatic channels and inform the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to complete the necessary administrative procedures. The UAE has not yet commented on the decision.
While Algerian authorities did not provide an immediate explanation for the termination, local media have reported rising tensions with the UAE in recent months. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has previously suggested that relations with all Gulf countries remain strong, except for one state widely interpreted as the UAE, which he accused of interference in Algeria’s internal affairs.
The cancellation marks a notable step in the evolving diplomatic landscape between North African and Gulf countries, highlighting how regional disputes can impact aviation and bilateral agreements.
