Airbus nears major aircraft deal with Scandinavian airline SAS
European aircraft manufacturer Airbus is reportedly close to securing a significant widebody aircraft order from Scandinavian airline SAS, a deal that could strengthen the airline’s long-term fleet modernization strategy.
According to industry reports, SAS is considering the acquisition of between 15 and 20 long-haul aircraft, with the order expected to include a combination of Airbus A330neo and Airbus A350 models. The agreement could be finalized in the coming weeks, with deliveries scheduled for the early years of the next decade.
If confirmed, the purchase would represent an important investment for SAS as it seeks to improve operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and expand its long-haul capabilities in an increasingly competitive aviation market.
The Airbus A330neo and A350 are among the manufacturer’s most advanced widebody aircraft. Both models are designed to offer improved fuel efficiency, lower operating costs, and enhanced passenger comfort compared with previous generations of aircraft.
Reports indicate that SAS also evaluated options from Boeing before leaning toward Airbus. Industry analysts suggest that maintaining fleet commonality may have been a key factor in the airline’s decision, as operating similar aircraft types can simplify maintenance, pilot training, and overall operational management.
The potential agreement comes at a time when airlines worldwide are reassessing fleet strategies in response to changing travel demand, sustainability objectives, and rising operating costs. Fuel prices remain a major concern for carriers, particularly following recent geopolitical tensions that have affected global energy markets.
SAS has already implemented measures to manage costs amid higher fuel expenses and evolving market conditions. A modern and efficient fleet is widely viewed as an essential tool for improving competitiveness and supporting long-term growth.
For Airbus, a successful deal would reinforce its strong position in the global widebody market and further expand its presence among major European carriers. The transaction would also highlight the continued demand for fuel-efficient aircraft as airlines prepare for future growth and operational challenges.
Industry observers will be closely watching for an official announcement, which could become one of the notable commercial aviation agreements of the year.
