Tetouan Park, Tanger Med Region – Japan Tobacco International (JTI) has officially commenced the construction of its pioneering Green Factory in North and West Africa, marking a significant milestone in the company's sustainable development journey.

Strategically situated in the Tetouan Park within the Tanger Med industrial zone, the state-of-the-art facility represents a substantial investment of approximately $92 million (MAD 931 million). This ambitious project underscores Morocco’s growing appeal as a hub for foreign investment, particularly in sectors committed to innovation and sustainability.

The decision to establish this groundbreaking factory in Morocco was profoundly influenced by the nation’s proactive measures to enhance its business environment. As highlighted in a company statement, JTI acknowledges Morocco's recent economic reforms and incentives, which have created an inviting climate for international ventures.

Approved by the National Investment Commission in January 2024, the project aligns seamlessly with Morocco’s 2023 Investment Charter and the “Made in Morocco” policy introduced in 2020. These initiatives aim to stimulate industrial growth and attract foreign capital, fostering a robust and dynamic economic landscape.

The launch event saw the presence of Jalal Benhayoun, General Director of the Regional Investment Center (CRI-TTA), among other notable attendees. Jose Luis Amador, General Director of JTI Northern and Western Africa, hailed the development as a transformative moment for the company in the region.

“This is a historic moment that marks the beginning of a new era for JTI in North and West Africa,” Amador stated. He commended the Moroccan authorities for their exemplary support and the conducive business environment they have cultivated.

Scheduled to break ground in August 2024, the Tetouan Park factory is poised to become a beacon of sustainable industry. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the facility will exemplify Green Factory standards, reinforcing JTI’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The new factory is projected to create 170 direct jobs and numerous indirect employment opportunities in the region, with a particular focus on promoting gender inclusion by ensuring that 30% of the workforce comprises women. This initiative reflects JTI’s dedication to fostering economic empowerment and diversity.

Spanning 4.7 hectares with an 18,000-square-meter built area, the facility will incorporate advanced energy efficiency measures, including LED lighting and automated climate control systems. Moreover, a sophisticated rainwater collection and recycling system will be implemented to meet non-potable water needs, underscoring the factory’s sustainable design.

As JTI embarks on this innovative venture, the Tetouan Park Green Factory stands as a testament to the company’s forward-thinking approach and Morocco’s strategic vision for sustainable industrial growth.
