Biden's Crossroads A Final Chance to Shape His Legacy Amid the Gaza Crisis
Once political leaders leave office, they often become preoccupied with their legacy. Many former presidents and prime ministers write books emphasizing their triumphs while downplaying their failures. U.S. President Joe Biden, as he nears the end of his presidency, likely reflects on his achievements, the good he’s done, and his impact on the lives of others.
Despite his efforts, Biden’s legacy is being critiqued harshly by both the media and former allies, especially after the Democratic Party’s significant losses to a resurging Donald Trump. Many argue that Biden should have stepped aside earlier, allowing for a competitive Democratic primary, which might have resulted in a stronger candidate. This, they claim, could have prevented Kamala Harris’s struggles and given the party a better chance.
Biden, however, still has a narrow opportunity to change his narrative, to redeem what many see as a tarnished legacy. There’s a chance for Biden to take a decisive stand and end the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza and the West Bank. The situation in Gaza, where Palestinians are suffering under an intensifying blockade, is deteriorating rapidly. The loss of life, particularly among women and children, is staggering. At the same time, Israeli civilians remain under threat from Hamas, with the Israeli government’s harsh actions fueling further violence.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has manipulated U.S. support, counting on Biden’s unconditional backing of Israel’s military actions. Even as Netanyahu continues his devastating campaign, Biden has an opportunity to act. Reports suggest that Biden has warned Israel that continued American support is contingent on tangible steps to alleviate the suffering in Gaza and the West Bank. But the world will soon see if Biden’s words hold any weight.
As of November 12, Biden faces a critical decision: Will he use his influence to stop the violence and press Israel to de-escalate, or will he fail to act, cementing his legacy as a president who could have done more? The outcome will define his place in history.
