The stage is set for an electrifying Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, as Morocco prepares to host the continent’s most prestigious football tournament. The final draw, held at the Mohammed V Theater in Rabat, revealed the group-stage matchups, with Morocco placed in Group A alongside Mali, Zambia, and Comoros. The event, attended by football luminaries and officials, marked the beginning of what promises to be a memorable competition.

Morocco embraces its role as host nation

As the host country, Morocco is poised to deliver a world-class tournament, showcasing its rich football heritage and state-of-the-art facilities. The draw ceremony, graced by prominent figures such as Morocco’s national team coach Walid Regragui, former coach Tarik Sektioui, and football legend Marouane Chamakh, underscored the significance of the event. FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa and CAF President Patrice Motsepe also emphasized the unifying power of football and the pride of hosting such a prestigious event.

- Group E: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan

- Group F: Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon, Mozambique

The tournament format ensures intense competition, with the top two teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stage. This structure guarantees that every match will be crucial, leaving no room for error.

In his opening remarks, FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa highlighted Morocco’s commitment to delivering an exceptional tournament. “We are happy to have you here in Morocco, your second home,” he said, emphasizing the country’s readiness to provide top-notch facilities and a memorable experience for fans and players alike. Lekjaa also linked AFCON 2025 to Morocco’s broader ambitions, including its co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which he described as a moment of pride for Africa.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe echoed these sentiments, celebrating football’s ability to unite the continent. “Football brings Africa together, uniting people and showing the world that African football is on the rise,” he said. Motsepe also praised Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, calling it a victory for all of Africa.
