Biedronka considers expansion through potential Carrefour asset acquisition in Poland
Biedronka, the largest food retailer in Poland and part of Jeronimo Martins, is exploring the possibility of acquiring assets from Carrefour in the Polish market.
The interest comes amid reports that Carrefour may consider selling parts of its operations in Poland as part of a broader strategy to focus on key markets such as France, Spain, and Brazil. If such a sale proceeds, Biedronka’s leadership believes it could play a significant role in taking over some of these assets.
Chief Executive Officer Luis Araujo stated that the company would be well positioned to integrate Carrefour’s local operations and support franchise partners. He added that such a move could benefit both the national economy and consumers by strengthening competition and improving retail efficiency.
Jeronimo Martins recently reported steady financial performance, supported by strong sales growth at Biedronka. However, the company also highlighted ongoing uncertainty linked to geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding energy costs and food price inflation.
The potential acquisition reflects a broader trend of consolidation in Europe’s retail sector, where major players are seeking scale and efficiency in a competitive market environment.
