Eu urged to investigate alleged Israeli intelligence interference in Slovenian election
The European Union is facing mounting pressure to investigate allegations of foreign interference in Slovenia’s upcoming parliamentary elections. Concerns have emerged following claims that a private Israeli intelligence firm may have attempted to influence the country’s political landscape.
Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob has reportedly called on the EU to launch a formal inquiry into the alleged activities of Black Cube. In a letter addressed to Ursula von der Leyen, Golob described the situation as a “hybrid threat” that could undermine democratic institutions and electoral integrity across the bloc.
According to Slovenian authorities, several operatives linked to the firm are suspected of conducting unlawful surveillance operations, including wiretapping. The allegations gained traction after leaked audio recordings surfaced, reportedly connecting individuals close to the government to corruption-related activities.
The timing of the controversy is particularly sensitive, as Slovenia prepares for a closely contested parliamentary election scheduled for March 22. Golob is expected to face strong competition from opposition leader Janez Janša, raising concerns about the potential impact of such allegations on voter sentiment.
In response, Golob has urged the European Commission to activate mechanisms designed to counter foreign interference, including the European Democracy Shield initiative. The mechanism aims to protect member states from disinformation campaigns and covert external influence operations.
While the claims remain under scrutiny, the case highlights growing concerns within the EU about safeguarding democratic processes against increasingly sophisticated forms of interference.
