AFCON 2025 final: Senegalese student union denies any attacks in Morocco
The General Union of Senegalese Students in Morocco (UGESM) has firmly denied reports alleging attacks against Senegalese students in the Kingdom following the AFCON 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal.
After Senegal’s victory in a tense final, several claims circulated on social media suggesting that Senegalese students had been targeted in different Moroccan cities. These allegations quickly raised concerns among the Senegalese student community and their families.
In a statement released on January 21, UGESM Central, which represents all Senegalese student sections across Morocco, said it had conducted thorough checks in coordination with local branches, regional representatives, and Moroccan authorities. According to the union, no confirmed cases of aggression against Senegalese students have been recorded.
The organization stressed that the situation remains calm and under control in all cities hosting Senegalese students. It highlighted the long-standing atmosphere of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence between Moroccan and Senegalese communities.
UGESM also praised the role of Moroccan authorities in ensuring the safety of all residents, regardless of nationality. The union urged students and their families to avoid spreading unverified information that could fuel fear and misunderstanding.
Speaking to local media, UGESM president Youssra Barada confirmed that there had been no intimidation or violence. “There have been no threats or attacks. For now, it is only friendly jokes between friends,” she said.
UGESM reassured public opinion that it remains fully mobilized and in constant contact with the Senegalese embassy in Morocco to monitor the situation and ensure the safety and well-being of Senegalese students.
