Morocco leads UA Peace and Security Council orientation program in Arusha
From March 22 to 28, 2025, Morocco hosts an orientation program in Arusha, Tanzania, aimed at newly elected members of the African Union's Peace and Security Council (PSC).
This meeting, chaired by Morocco's Permanent Representative to the AU and UN Economic Commission for Africa, Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, seeks to provide these officials with a comprehensive understanding of their upcoming roles and responsibilities within the PSC.
Designed to prepare newly elected members for their duties starting April 1, 2025, the program serves as an initiation process. It familiarizes participants with the PSC's mandate, its operational methods, and its interactions with other AU bodies. Discussions will focus on the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), African Governance Architecture (AGA), and the AU’s roadmap for conflict resolution by 2030.
Newly elected and re-elected PSC members will engage in in-depth sessions with outgoing members and former PSC officials. These exchanges will facilitate the sharing of best practices, experiences, and key lessons to enhance conflict management across Africa.
The program will also help clarify the PSC’s priorities for 2025, including immediate challenges to peace and security, while deepening working relationships with various stakeholders, such as Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and other AU entities.
As the PSC President for March 2025, Morocco emphasizes cooperation and coordination with regional and international institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, which holds primary responsibility for international peace and security. This initiative aims to bolster security and stability on the African continent.
Through this program, Morocco underscores its unwavering commitment to a united and peaceful Africa, reaffirming its role in promoting stability across the continent. Participants will have the opportunity to collectively reflect on ongoing challenges to peace and security in Africa, including current geopolitical crises, and to explore concrete solutions to address them.
The orientation program for newly elected PSC members is a vital step in strengthening the PSC's capabilities and an essential moment to prepare its members for a central role in governance and crisis management in Africa.
