Five killed after Amazon cargo plane crashes beyond runway at Miami airport
Five people were killed and five others injured on Sunday after an Amazon cargo aircraft overran the runway at Miami International Airport and crashed into several vehicles before catching fire, local authorities said.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed the death toll during a press conference at the airport, saying five people had lost their lives while another five were injured in the incident.
Miami-Dade Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said three of the injured victims were in critical condition, while the other two were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) identified the aircraft as a Boeing 767-300 operated by Amazon Air on flight Prime Air 7598. The plane had arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when the accident occurred. The FAA has opened an investigation to determine what caused the aircraft to leave the runway.
The airport initially closed all runways and taxiways following the crash, disrupting operations at one of the busiest airports in the United States. Authorities later announced that one runway had reopened shortly before 5 p.m. local time.
Videos shared on social media showed thick smoke and flames rising from the cargo aircraft, which was still bearing the Prime Air logo. Several vehicles, including trucks, could be seen near the aircraft after it came to a stop beyond the end of the runway.
According to preliminary FAA information, the Boeing 767 landed on Runway 30, which is more than 2,700 meters long. Investigators have yet to establish why the aircraft failed to stop within the designated runway area.
Runway overruns are among the serious risks faced by commercial aviation, particularly during landing, and investigations typically examine factors such as weather conditions, aircraft performance, runway conditions and crew actions. The authorities are expected to analyze flight data and other evidence as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the deadly accident.
