Elon Musk congratulates AfD after strong election result in Saxony-Anhalt
Elon Musk has congratulated Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party after its strong performance in the Saxony-Anhalt regional election, while the party’s leading candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, signaled his willingness to cooperate with the American billionaire if the AfD were to take control of the state government.
Musk posted a brief message of congratulations on X in response to a statement by AfD co-leader Alice Weidel celebrating Siegmund’s electoral performance. The billionaire wrote “Well done” in support of the party’s result.
Siegmund subsequently thanked Musk for his backing and said he would welcome what he described as strong and constructive cooperation should the AfD assume responsibility for governing Saxony-Anhalt. He also argued that Germany could once again become an attractive destination for investment.
Former US ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell also reacted to the election outcome on X, describing the AfD’s performance as a major victory and suggesting that it marked a new political moment for Germany.
According to opinion polling cited in connection with the election, the AfD secured around 44% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, representing a historic breakthrough for the party in the eastern German state.
Despite its strong electoral showing, however, the AfD faces significant obstacles to forming a government. Other political parties have so far rejected cooperation with the right-wing party, meaning that its ability to translate the election result into executive power will depend on future negotiations and the positions adopted by other parties.
The result is nevertheless likely to intensify Germany’s political debate over the AfD’s growing electoral influence. The party has made significant gains in several eastern regions, while its opponents continue to oppose forming governing alliances with it.
