Floods and mudslides leave more than 1,300 dead in China and Nepal
The death toll from devastating floods and mudslides along the border between China and Nepal has risen to 1,387, according to figures released by authorities in both countries.
Chinese authorities reported that 43 people had died and another 519 remained missing in the Tibet Autonomous Region. In Nepal, local authorities have recorded 1,344 deaths linked to the disaster, while nearly 4,900 people are still unaccounted for.
Search and rescue teams continue to face major challenges as they work through areas affected by extensive flooding and landslides. In Nepal, authorities have collected more than 2,200 DNA samples to help identify victims and assist families searching for missing relatives.
The disaster was triggered on August 26 when an avalanche sent a massive flow of ice, rocks and mud into the Trishuli River in the border region between Nepal and China. The resulting surge swept through several communities, destroying homes, roads and other essential infrastructure.
The scale of the destruction has complicated rescue and recovery operations, with damaged roads and disrupted infrastructure making access to some affected areas difficult. Authorities are continuing to assess the damage while searching for survivors and missing people.
Floods, landslides and other weather-related disasters can have particularly severe consequences in mountainous regions, where steep terrain and unstable slopes can accelerate the movement of water, mud and debris. The latest tragedy has once again highlighted the vulnerability of communities living in areas exposed to natural hazards.
