Trump declares the Moon American property in a provocative wave of AI-generated posts
US President Donald Trump has sparked a fresh wave of online controversy after declaring that the Moon belongs to the United States in a series of posts published on his Truth Social platform. The posts featured more than 30 images, many of them apparently generated or heavily altered using artificial intelligence.
One of the most striking images showed the Moon alongside the American flag and carried the message: “The Moon is ours.” The provocative statement came only days after Trump visited a space center in Texas, where he spoke about the US space program and expressed his hope that a lunar landmark could eventually bear his name.
During the visit, Trump also welcomed astronaut Reid Wiseman, commander of NASA’s Artemis II mission. He pointed to the fact that a lunar crater has been named after his late wife, using the example while discussing the symbolic importance of names associated with the Moon.
Trump’s online posts went far beyond space exploration. Among them was a satirical image depicting actor Robert De Niro wearing a shirt supporting the president, a reference to the actor’s longstanding criticism of Trump and their highly publicized political differences.
Other AI-generated scenes presented fictional historical encounters and imagined changes to the names of major geographic landmarks. One image portrayed former US President George Washington visiting Trump, while another showed Trump supposedly changing the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” A separate image imagined the US state of New Mexico being renamed “New America.”
The collection also included more politically charged imagery. One AI-generated picture altered the shape of Iran to make it resemble Trump’s face, while other images depicted sunken warships and a television screen showing former President Joe Biden wearing a Trump-supporting hat.
Another manipulated image showed a passenger ship engulfed in flames and sinking, with the words “Democratic Party” displayed across it.
The posts illustrate the growing role of AI-generated imagery in political communication and online campaigning. Such technology allows public figures to create highly recognizable and often exaggerated visual narratives within minutes, while making it increasingly difficult for audiences to distinguish between authentic photographs, satire and digitally generated content.
Trump has frequently used Truth Social as a direct channel to communicate with supporters, attack political opponents and comment on national and international issues. His latest series of posts once again demonstrates how social media and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly intertwined with modern political messaging.
