Israeli Forces Strike Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital Without Warning

Israeli Forces Strike Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital Without Warning

The Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza has become the latest focal point of violence, with Israeli forces conducting airstrikes and storming the facility. According to the hospital's director and Gaza’s Civil Defence agency, at least four staff members were killed in the assault. The incident has left the hospital struggling to function amidst an ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The Attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital

Hossam Abu Safieh, the hospital’s director, described the strikes as targeting the northern and western sections of the hospital, accompanied by heavy and direct fire. Following the bombardment, Israeli soldiers entered the facility, forcing all staff, patients, and displaced persons into the courtyard. Hours later, they were permitted to return inside, but the aftermath left the hospital with no surgeons and minimal operational capacity.

International Outcry and Critical Conditions

The World Health Organization (WHO) condemned the attack, highlighting the absence of any official warning or evacuation order. WHO spokesman Richard Peeperkorn emphasized the troubling nature of this attack, which came just days after the organization facilitated the entry of an Indonesian medical team into the hospital. The facility had already been grappling with a lack of essential supplies, including fuel, making the evacuation and destruction even more devastating.

Accusations of War Crimes

The health ministry in Gaza labeled the assault a "war crime," citing extensive violence and killings in and around the hospital. It stressed the critical condition of the remaining injured patients who urgently require medical care. The Israeli military has yet to comment on the incident.

Broader Military Operations

The attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital is part of a broader military campaign in the northern Gaza towns of Beit Lahiya, Beit Hanoon, and Jabalia, which has intensified in recent months. Thousands have been forced to flee the escalating violence in these areas. Reports suggest a strategic effort to depopulate northern Gaza of medical facilities, as patients and staff are increasingly pushed towards central Gaza.

Violations of International Law

Hospitals and medical personnel are protected under international law. However, repeated attacks on health facilities in Gaza, including the recent killing of Kamal Adwan Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit director by a drone strike, have sparked widespread condemnation. Israel has accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, for military purposes, while Hamas denies these claims and accuses Israel of indiscriminate targeting.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deepen, with thousands of patients requiring urgent medical evacuation. The international community is calling for immediate intervention to ensure the safety of medical personnel and facilities amidst ongoing hostilities.
