Morocco strengthens pilot training ahead of F-16 Block 72 deliveries
Morocco is expanding its military aviation training capabilities as it prepares to integrate a new generation of F-16 fighter jets into its air force, with advanced flight simulators set to play a central role in preparing pilots for the aircraft’s sophisticated systems.
The Royal Moroccan Air Force is expected to receive two full-mission simulators specifically designed for the F-16 Block 72 under a U.S. contract awarded to CAE, a company specializing in simulation and military training technologies. The contract is valued at more than $42 million, with a significant part of the project scheduled to be carried out at Sidi Slimane Air Base.
The simulators are designed to reproduce the experience of operating an F-16 Block 72 with a high degree of realism. Each system will feature a cockpit representative of the fighter, advanced visual displays, computing and electrical equipment, as well as a dedicated instructor station.
The training environment will allow pilots to practice a broad range of missions, from takeoff, flight and maneuvering procedures to emergency situations, unusual operating conditions and complex combat scenarios. Instructors will be able to monitor pilot performance and adjust the simulated environment during exercises.
One of the main advantages of such systems is the ability to repeatedly practice situations that would be difficult, dangerous or expensive to reproduce using operational aircraft. Pilots can train for equipment failures, challenging weather conditions and potential aerial threats without exposing personnel or aircraft to the risks associated with live exercises.
Simulation can also reduce the need for actual flight hours during certain stages of training, helping limit fuel consumption, aircraft wear and operating costs. At the same time, pilots can repeat specific scenarios until they reach the required level of proficiency.
The new systems are tailored to the Block 72 configuration rather than older F-16 variants already operated by Morocco. The program also includes equipment associated with the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System II, along with spare parts, support equipment, central servers and backup power systems.
The investment in simulation comes alongside Morocco’s broader effort to modernize its F-16 fleet. The kingdom has previously ordered 25 new F-16 Block 72 aircraft while also pursuing an upgrade program for its existing fighters. Once the acquisition and modernization programs are completed, Morocco’s fleet is expected to reach roughly 48 F-16 aircraft.
The F-16 Block 72 incorporates advanced avionics and sensor technologies, including the AN/APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array radar, as well as improved electronic systems and enhanced capabilities for detecting and responding to threats.
For Morocco, however, acquiring modern fighter aircraft is only one part of the wider modernization process. The introduction of advanced combat platforms requires appropriately trained pilots, specialized technical personnel, upgraded air bases, maintenance capabilities, logistics and continuous operational evaluation.
The simulator program therefore represents an important element of the country’s broader approach to military aviation modernization. By combining new aircraft with advanced training infrastructure, Morocco aims to ensure that its personnel are prepared to exploit the capabilities of the new platforms once they enter operational service.
Implementation of the F-16 simulator contract is expected to be completed by April 2029. The systems will then form part of the Royal Moroccan Air Force’s training infrastructure, supporting both pilot qualification and continued operational readiness.
The move highlights a broader shift in modern air-force development, where combat effectiveness depends not only on the number and sophistication of aircraft, but also on the quality of training, technical support and infrastructure surrounding them. For Morocco, strengthening simulation capabilities alongside its F-16 modernization program is intended to build an integrated system combining advanced aircraft, technology, personnel and operational readiness.
