U.S. forces divert 86 vessels and stop three others under Iran port blockade
U.S. military forces have diverted 86 commercial vessels and stopped three others since Washington imposed a blockade on Iranian ports in mid-July, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
In a statement published on X, CENTCOM said that as of September 2, American forces had redirected 86 commercial ships, stopped three vessels and boarded two others to verify their compliance with the measures in place.
The U.S. military command said American naval forces were continuing to enforce the blockade against Iran, as tensions remain high over maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strategic waterway is one of the world's most important energy corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil and fuel shipments. Any prolonged disruption in the strait could therefore have wider consequences for international trade and energy markets.
The U.S. measures were introduced after Iran once again closed the Strait of Hormuz. The move followed a temporary reopening that had been agreed under a framework understanding between Washington and Tehran but lasted less than three weeks, from June 18 to July 8.
The 60-day framework agreement, reportedly brokered by Pakistan, was intended to establish a ceasefire and create conditions for negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. It also included discussions on easing U.S. economic sanctions and maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest maritime operations reflect the continuing confrontation between the United States and Iran and highlight the strategic importance of the Gulf shipping route. With commercial vessels facing increased restrictions and uncertainty, developments around the Strait of Hormuz remain closely watched by governments, shipping companies and global energy markets.
