Nobel Laureates Oppose Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Nomination for Health Secretary

In a powerful statement, 77 Nobel laureates have expressed their opposition to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s nomination as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) under President-elect Donald Trump. The Nobel Prize winners, who come from diverse fields including medicine, chemistry, physics, and economics, signed an open letter to the U.S. Senate, urging lawmakers to reject Kennedy’s appointment due to concerns over his qualifications and controversial views on vaccines.

The letter, which includes prominent figures such as Drew Weissman, a 2023 Nobel laureate in Medicine for his groundbreaking work on mRNA vaccines, emphasizes that Kennedy’s background as an environmental lawyer, with no medical or public health expertise, makes him unfit for such a critical role. Kennedy, who is the nephew of the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy, has been a vocal opponent of vaccines, spreading misinformation about their safety and effectiveness.

Kennedy’s opposition to vaccines dates back to his early advocacy against the supposed link between vaccines and autism, a claim that has been thoroughly debunked by scientific research. More recently, he has propagated falsehoods about the Covid-19 vaccine, raising further concerns among public health experts. In addition to his controversial stance on vaccines, Kennedy has also proposed removing fluoride from tap water, a substance widely recognized as essential for dental health.

The letter condemns Kennedy’s record, noting that his appointment would place the health and safety of the public at risk. The Nobel laureates argue that his lack of relevant qualifications, combined with his history of opposing vital public health initiatives, makes him an unsuitable candidate for a position that oversees the nation's health policies.

The letter concludes with a strong call to action, urging the Senate to vote against Kennedy’s confirmation: "In addition to his lack of credentials or relevant experience in medicine, science, public health, or administration, Mr. Kennedy has been an opponent of many health-protecting and life-saving vaccines, such as those that prevent measles and polio. We strongly urge you to vote against the confirmation of his appointment."

This statement from the Nobel laureates adds to the growing controversy surrounding Trump’s cabinet nominations. Kennedy’s nomination is part of a series of high-profile picks that have sparked debate and controversy, including the nomination of other individuals with questionable backgrounds or histories of alleged misconduct. However, the Nobel laureates' letter stands out as a clear and collective voice of concern about the potential dangers of placing someone with Kennedy’s track record in charge of the nation’s health policies.
