Death toll from heavy Japan snow reaches 30
Unusually heavy snowfall in northern Japan has claimed at least 30 lives over the past two weeks, authorities reported on Tuesday. The worst-hit areas, including Aomori prefecture, experienced up to 4.5 metres (14 feet) of snow, leaving residents trapped and vehicles immobilized.
The central government deployed troops to assist with snow removal and prevent further casualties, while Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi convened a special cabinet meeting to coordinate emergency efforts. Many schools were closed, and public transport was suspended in affected regions.
Officials warned of the dangers posed by melting snow from rooftops, which has caused fatal accidents among the elderly. Residents praised the efforts of troops and emergency crews, but authorities struggled to keep up with the continuous snowfall.
