New Year's Day Terror Attack in New Orleans Claims 15 Lives; ISIS Connection Confirmed
President Biden confirmed that the deadly New Year's Day attack in New Orleans, which killed 15 people and injured dozens, was ISIS-inspired. The perpetrator, 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar, posted videos declaring his ISIS allegiance hours before driving his vehicle into crowds on Bourbon Street.
FBI investigators discovered an ISIS flag in Jabbar's vehicle along with multiple weapons and explosive devices. The Bureau is treating the incident as a terrorist act and believes Jabbar may not have acted alone, though no additional arrests have been made.
The attack occurred in the early morning hours as New Year's celebrations were underway. Jabbar died in an exchange of gunfire with police. Authorities are working to identify the victims.
In a possibly related incident, a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas resulted in one death and seven injuries. Investigators found gas canisters and fireworks in that vehicle.
President Biden condemned the New Orleans attack as "despicable" and "heinous." Former President Trump criticized law enforcement's handling of both incidents, claiming "ineffective" security measures.
