Deadly Mpox Outbreak Claims Over 1,200 Lives in DR Congo's Health Crisis
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is grappling with a severe Mpox outbreak that has resulted in 1,267 deaths in 2024, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene, and Social Welfare. The outbreak has affected over 55,300 people, with the disease maintaining a 2.28% fatality rate.
Recent data from the ministry's annual epidemiological report shows a concerning spike in cases, with 3,053 new infections recorded during the week of December 16-21 alone. The outbreak's impact has been particularly concentrated in nine provincial health divisions.
In response to the crisis, health authorities have implemented countermeasures, including a targeted vaccination campaign launched in October 2024. The initiative focuses on protecting high-risk populations across multiple provinces.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified delayed diagnosis and limited treatment accessibility in many regions as key factors contributing to the DRC's elevated mortality rate. The country currently stands as the global epicenter of the Mpox epidemic.
